Pour beaucoup, le CPFR est vu comme la continuité de l’actuel GPA (Gestion Partagée des Approvisionnements) à qui il pourrrait à terme succéder.

Cette méthode est basée sur l’amélioration de la supply chain (chaîne d’approvisionnement) grâce à une collaboration accrue entre acteurs dont certains objectifs sont pourtant contraires (clients et fournisseurs) avec en particulier un partage des informations ayant trait aux prévisions des ventes et à la planification.

L'idée est de synchroniser les plans d'actions des entreprises en fonction de ce partage d'informations.

Le CPFR nécessite donc une évolution dans les mentalités avec l’adoption de stratégies de type « gagnant-gagnant » impliquant coordination, échange d’informations et homogénéisation des systèmes d’échange de données informatiques.

  
 
Le CPFR peut donc être considéré comme l’étape suivante dans la collaboration entre distribution et industrie. L’échange de prévision de ventes devrait permettre d’améliorer les performances en terme de réduction des stocks et d’amélioration de la qualité de service (réduction des délais et des ruptures).
 
 
   
 
La principale limite à la généralisation de cette méthode réside toutefois dans la nécessaire évolution des mentalités pour passer à une réelle « logique collaborative »
