Key conference sessions

Over 40 free to attend conference sessions were held during the three day event, led by high profile speakers and covering important issues and topics. One of the key conference sessions was a shippers' panel that featured spokespeople from Alcoa, Procter and Gamble and EVO and the European Shippers Council.

Neil Madden, Editor of Bulk Distributor magazine chaired the shippers' panel.Essentially, the key topics we covered during the session were ‘what keeps shippers awake at night'. We talked about today's supply chain drivers and how shippers are working with logistics service providers to achieve supply chain efficienciesNeil said. “The conference session went well - a lot of important subjects were covered and there was a high level of participation from the delegates as well as the speakers.”

Marco Wiesehahn, Policy Advisor from EVO and the European Shippers Council sat on the panel. “The Shippers Panel conference was a good session, with a focus on intermodal transport and the opportunity to send some key messages into the room” Marco said. “For example, the European Shippers Council is trying to promote intermodal transport in Europe but issues still being faced include communication in the supply chain and the modernisation of communication systems.”

Marcel Merkx, Director of Transportation and Logistics AMM Europe from Alcoa also sat on the panel. “Topics we covered included looking at how to address sustainable logistics through sustainable products and solutions, and helping carriers and shippers to transport goods more efficiently” Marcel explained. “Intermodal Europe is a very relevant event and it was good to have Alcoa and Procter & Gamble on the panel together because it seemed at first that the two companies are very different but it became apparent throughout the session that we share a lot of similarities.

The freight forwarders panel chaired by CLECAT was also well-attended. Don van Riel, Managing Director of Trimodal Europe BV sat on the panel as a member of CLECAT / UIP. “We covered a number of interesting topics including intermodal transport and IT” he said. “We also talked about the European Shippers Council and CLECAT (European freight forwarders and logistics association) combining forces to work together, sharing equipment, knowledge and resources.

A World Port strategy Forum was held at Intermodal Europe 2012. Ingrid Römers from Port of Rotterdam, the European Harbour Masters Committee and the International Harbour Masters Association was part of the forum and found the session very useful.

I think this session has been positive in highlighting the importance of joining forces. The European Harbour Masters' Committee is becoming more involved in order to improve commercial operations with our nautical expertise” said Ingrid.

Don Miller, Director of Globe Tracker International A/S presented a technology case study. “The session went really well and it was a great opportunity to teach people about some of the technology that is available to assist container operations” he said.

A Focus on Asia conference session, led by Mr Gopal R of Frost and Sullivan, was particularly topical with the launch of Intermodal Asia 2014 announced during the event. “The conference session went well and there was a lot of interest in understanding how Asia impacts Europe. It is good to share between different regions and the issues and challenges faced are the same in Asia as in Europe” he said. “Intermodal Asia 2014 is a good idea for the purpose of involving other Key Regions like Middle East and Asia more in the debate and discussion, to understand opportunities across regions that can be leveraged by Europe.”

Intermodal Europe 2013 in Hamburg

Intermodal Europe 2012 has been deemed a success by event organisers, Informa Exhibitions and the exhibition floor plan for Intermodal Europe 2013 is over 75% full already. “The feedback from this year's event has been amazing” says Event Director, Sophie Ahmed. “As well as interest in Intermodal Europe 2013, we have also had a lot of interest in Intermodal Asia 2014 which is great, particularly as Asia plays such an important part in the industry.
